As a social enterprise, our operation is based on the "Triple R" or "3R" philosophy:

This philosophy is based on the principle that it is more economical, environmentally friendly and sustainable to reuse WEEE wherever possible than it is to just recycle everything.  It is our belief that this process not only provides environmental benefits but also benefits our communities and society as a whole.

The Triple R or 3R Philosophy Explained:

Refurbish
Once IT hardware has been safely transported to our sites, we securely remove data, dismantle, repair, reassemble and reconfigure equipment that could be reused.  We have experienced technicians and engineers on site who do this.  Our experienced staff also provide training to volunteers.  We have a proactive volunteer training programme, where volunteers can gain new skills in IT refurbishment, IT asset management and IT support.  This helps them to build confidence, gain knowledge and provides a step in the right direction to full employment.

Reuse
Where possible we put back into use any refurbished equipment.  For example CRT screens and old TFTs can last many years. But because companies have to rely on the latest technologies these items are no longer required.  However, it doesn't mean that screens can't be put to good use elsewhere such as our community development projects.

This is major area of work for ECS and where we truly deliver as a social enterprise.  Not only do we donate your refurbished IT hardware to charities, not-for-profit organisations and community projects; but we also sell items in our store at significantly reduced prices. The profits generated are ploughed back into the community.

Recycle
We safely recycle parts that cannot be salvaged for reuse. As a priority we identify useable IT and WEEE.  We then refurbish and repair them.  Only the most damaged and obsolete items are recycled.  This reduces carbon footprint by reducing demand for new equipment and therefore reduces manufacturing.  Only a small amount goes for recycling. 

Our aim is to achieve 100% recycling or re-use of IT hardware.  The Triple R or 3R philosophy helps us achieve this.
